FAQ/Info

Where is your office? My office is West Greeley at 1019 39th Ave Ste M. I'm in an office complex that is behind chili's and the Epic Egg.

What are your hours?  I work on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays but hours may vary some. If there is a specific day/time that you need I may be able to accommodate so don't hesitate to ask. Once you are an established client you will receive a link to be able to access my schedule and request and manage appointments yourself.

Do you take Insurance? Yes. At this time I am in network with Aetna and United Healthcare. I can also provide a form that you can attempt to file with your insurance company for reimbursement as an out of network provider.

What paperwork do I need to fill out and how do I do that? As soon as you are scheduled for your intake you will receive an email that has a portal link. You will need to click on this link to establish an account through the therapy notes website. Once you are in the portal, you will see all the forms that you need to fill out, sign, and submit. Please do this before we meet. If you have trouble signing in or questions about the forms please contact me. The portal is also how we will do Telehealth sessions and provides a way for you to request, cancel, and manage your appointments.

What do I need to bring to my first appointment? Just yourself!

Who needs to come to the first appointment? If the appointment is for an adult, then just bring yourself. If the appointment is for a minor then preferably I would like both parents to attend, but at least one parent needs to be present at the first session. If the session is for a child 10 or under I prefer to do the first session with both parents without the child present. I know that is not always possible, but I would like a chance to talk to each parent ahead of meeting the child, even if that takes place on the phone. Most of the sessions after that will be with the child or teen alone, however I like to spend the first 5-10 minutes talking to the parent and every few months we will meet together as a family again to assess the progress. The law allows for teens 16 and older to seek out counseling without a parent present, but I would still prefer a parent to be present, especially if they want to be included in treatment and if they are financially responsible for the appointments.

How long do I have to come to therapy? That is something that we decide together. However, I urge anyone to come for at least 3 sessions before deciding that it isn't for you. It can sometimes take 3 sessions for us to really get to know each other and find a good rhythm that works for us. I always like to start out with sessions on a weekly basis, but as we progress in therapy, we can decide together to reduce the frequency based on what you need. Some people find that just a few sessions is all that they needed and others decide that it would be helpful for a long-term basis. It can be hard to predict at first just how much you will want or need, I encourage you to be open to the process.

Do you do family therapy or couples therapy? I have done both of these in the past, but its not my primary focus or preference. When I work with children there will always be some family therapy that takes place as its important to have the family involved. There are various times that I will do family or couples sessions with my adult clients as well if it is something we decide would be helpful. However, if that is the primary reason you are seeking therapy and you need family or couples counseling on consistent basis, I would be happy to refer you to someone.

What if its not a good fit? No counselor is going to be a perfect fit for everyone. I will not be offended or hurt if you decide that it's not working. Ultimately I desire that you find the help and healing that you want and need. I greatly encourage honest feedback and I can try to change my approach or adjust according to your feedback, but if I can't then I can help you find someone that can. Please don't be afraid to talk to me about how you are feeling.

What do I do when I get there? Each building is labeled with the correct address. So once you find building 1019 you will go in the front door and take an immediate left to go down the stairs. Once at the bottom of the stairs you will find a waiting area. Go ahead and have a seat in the waiting area. I will come out to the lobby to get you. If you've been waiting more than 10 minutes please send me a text.

What if I am running late? Often I will have people scheduled all throughout the day and do not have the option to extend past the time you are scheduled. Please make every effort to be on time. If you are running late, it will simply just take up that much of your appointment. Please note that you will still be charged for the time you were scheduled.

What if I need to cancel? I ask that you give me at least 24 hours notice. You can call, text, or email to let me know. If you no show your appointment or cancel within 24 hours you will be charged a $50 no show/late cancel fee for the time you were scheduled.

Do you have any specialties? I talk some about this and my approaches to counseling in my About me page, but I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and PCIT (Parent Child Interaction Therapy). These are both evidence based therapy modalities that require additional training and equipment.

What is EMDR? It is an intense form of treatment designed to treat trauma but has been found to be effective in treating a variety of different symptoms and issues. It involved bi-lateral stimulation of some kind either through light or sound to stimulate the brain in order to help reprocess negative or traumatic memories. Check out https://www.emdria.org/page/emdr_therapy to learn more.  If this is something you are interested in, we can talk about it more at the intake.

What is PCIT? PCIT works with parents and young children (ages 2-7) who are having a lot of behavior issues at home and school. It is something the parents do with the children and can be very effective. Check out PCIT.org for more information. We can discuss whether this would be right for your family at the intake.
